Weighing in

As I often do when driving around my fair town, I listen to NPR. Yesterday, while driving over to Mrs. Chili’s, the topic of NH’s proposed bills for gay marriage and for civil unions was raised. As the Live Free or Die state, I feel it is entirely appropriate for this state to have either of these laws in place.
I was half listening, concentrating on the road. However, I came to full attention when I heard THIS read out as one of the comments on the proposal. I do not know to whom this quote was attributed, but it was a doozy: “We feel that a law allowing gay marriage violates our rights to object to homosexuality.”
Uh, if that wasn’t a clear demonstration of rampant stupidity, I don’t know what is. Sure, object - as you are entitled to do - but please! If a person objects to something, they should not do it, it’s that simple. Too often moral/religious opinions become legislation, and the Granite State’s Governor, as a Dem, has to uphold the no gay marriage platform to appease his constituents, but objections on the lines of that knuckle dragger are absurd; it’s like saying that regular garbage pickup violates my right to litter.
I have been surrounded by gay and lesbian couples for my entire adult life and I fully support their rights to marry, if they wish to. Among our dearest friends is a Seattle gay couple who have been together for 16 years. They aren’t married because that’s not a choice they’ve made, but they should be allowed if they want to.
Bill Maher said it well:
“Democrats say to gay people, ‘What do you care [about marriage equality]? You can still live together, we’re not stopping you, we’re not breaking into your bedroom.’ My answer is, ‘F**k you. We’re all equal, or we’re not.”

It would be very difficult for me to agree with you more… but you already knew that about me…
