The Gazebo Effect

You know when you KNOW a word, when it hovers, unreachable, in front of you, tantalizing you with hints, but not ever fully revealing itself? You know how your brain itches, straining to the task of dredging up the word (or name) you’re hunting?
Years ago, in the early days of our marriage, Bob and I [...]

Freecycling

Over the past 2 years or so, Bob and I have taken advantage of Freecycle.org and their networks of people looking to acquire and get rid of a HUGE range of things. Their tag line is “Changing the world one gift at a time,” and they describe their organization this way:
Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is [...]

Ten Things Tuesday: Dogs

Both my Canaan canine companions bring to my life a contingent of joys, exasperations and frustrations that I would not have believed had someone sat me down and given me the “what’s what” speech in my pre-dog days. In no particular order, here are some of the things, now part of my routine, that would [...]

What it takes

Sometimes, I worry.
Uselss emotion, really and yet, I sometimes invest just enough energy in my worries to keep them cascading in my mind in a ridiculous juggler’s arc. I don’t delve too deeply into them, lest they grab hold and make me a gibbering wreck, but I do stir them now and then, kind [...]

Party Time: a community effort

With banners flicking in the wind and swords and shields a plenty, today we do war.
It’s Monkeyface’s tenth birthday party and in 75 degrees and under a clear blue sky, armed with foam and duct tape boffers and plastic basket shields, we will organize silly battles for small people to jump into the fray [...]

In just about six month’s time, OrganFam will be hosting Boo’s Bat Mitzvah. In keeping with our philosophy of sustainable/environmental/organic/local, we’ve begun to set things in motion for a fabulous event.
1. Our save-the-date cards were printed with vegetable and soy-based inks by eco-friendly printer, GreenerPrinter, on 100% post-consumer, recycled paper. Using wind [...]

Offerings

Today was the second to last time my composition class met and as a prompt to get the reflective juices flowing, I asked the 5 adolescents ringing the table to write about their relationship to writing now that the semester was ending; has it altered in any way? After a 10 minute scribble, one [...]

Nature’s Eye

For her fifth-grade English assignment, Monkey had to write something she felt strongly about, so she wrote about our dog, Shem. I wasn’t going to post today but this was so lovely, I couldn’t resist. At nine, she is writing with a clarity I wish I saw more in my adult students…

I see my [...]
