I wish everyone in the goyishe (non-Jewish) world a very merry and joyous Christmas, full of Santa’s bounty and pertinent return receipts.
Yesterday, I ranted about how my impending guests were particularly non-communicative. At this point, I should mention that somewhere a misunderstanding and poor planning crept into the discussion, and after hunting them down, I have found out that they’re not coming until Thursday. Mea Culpa for the tirade and bad O’Mama for improperly marking up her calendar. My stupid bad.
For the O’Fam, Christmas day means watching movies, having family cuddles and avoiding the radio AND the television. Since we recently had our surreal but enjoyable family (delayed) Hanukkah gift-giving party, hooked up via Skype from sister’s home in MA with my parents’ in Montreal, we’ve got some new things to play with and watch.
These are some of the things going on:
1. The entire LOTR trilogy, extra bits included. I have seen these movies only once each and am slavering to see them again. Even if I had to wrap the boxes my mom had delivered here, the magic was not lost.
2. My twin gave me the first season of Bones, but I am not certain I want to commit to the series. Can anyone chime in an opinion of this show?
3. Bob received a DVD of The Ren and Stimpy Show, instead of the Pinky and the Brain DVD he was expecting; as soon as
the return hordes die back, we’ll venture forth to do the exchange.
4. Planet Earth, bought for us LAST year, has been providing hours of stunning visuals and fabulously British voice overage by the animal/wildlife-show-related voice over king, David Attenborough.
5. Aside from new toys, we’re also making crafts and undertaking projects: Boo has been creating her version of the Ugly Dolls and will be gifting her masterpiece to one of the babies (one girls, one boy) of friends of ours, aredue to arrive just about any time now. Each family hope to receive a tax return for 07, so join me in sending birthing energy, will you? Monkey is making ornaments for friends, I’m doing some Bat Mitzvah planning, and Bob is putting up walls in the basement.
6. Sephira, our two-year old dog, is heating up quite rapidly. Pretty soon, as in just as soon as the nice lady at the local kennel comes back into the area, we’ll be sending our little furred female off on another three- week vacation. Meanwhile, we’re keeping our dogs, and any conjugal urges, under wraps.
7. Tonight, in what has become a yearly thing, we’re heading over to our old neighbors (as in time, not in age) for Pictionary and pie for Christmas day eve (what I think today is called). We’re bringing over our juicer and will make sorbet with maple syrup and a little soy milk; cherries and mangoes combined are divine.
8. Tonight, in England, airs the BBC Dr. Who Christmas Special, Voyage of the Damned. My eldest daughter and I fervently hope to be able to watch it sometime soon or, at the very least, hear reviews. Dan, if you watched it, will you let me know how it was? Check out the trailer:
9. Monkey and Boo have requested a trip to the movies to see The Golden Compass, as well as the new National Treasure movie. Despite mixed reviews, and repeated warning to suspend disbelief to the most extreme extent possible, I am looking forward to seeing what Nic Cage’s new flick comes up with.
10. For all of you, I wish you a wonderful New Year’s Eve celebration! What are your plans? I think we’ll be with some friends, will try very hard to stay up to watch the ball drop. It’s difficult to believe there are mere days left of 2007, don’t you think?

I was skeptical about Bones as well and was finally convinced to watch it late in the 2nd season. I’ve regretted not beginning it at the beginning ever since.
It’s recorded on our DVR, I’ll let you know what it was like when I’ve watched it, but I can’t see it being anything but great.
I’ve just pooled all the money various parents gave me for chrismas and spend £180 at amazon on DVDs.
I’m rather looking forward to the parcel.
In order:
LOTR: you better damn well well wait until I can sit and watch those extra bits too…. Besides, my DVD player and TV are bigger than yours…. Nyah.
Planet Earth… Still wanna see it. After LOTR.
The Dr. Who trailer worked. Now I gotta see it too.
Movies with the spawn – count us in (singular or plural) if you’re up to it..
How did I spend Xmas..
Lets see… Up (OK, out of bed. I was up at about 2:30 studying) at about 8:30, coffee (mmmmmmm), then spent about 4 hours helping a friend write and debug code to handle a bunch of weird Hebrew-Gregorian calendar functions. Then, pack the mom and assorted spawn into the truck, and wander north to visit the oldest in her new College Apartment. Home at about 6P, do some work on a couple of the shop projects, check email, blog, and back to the books until I pass out.
Nope. Ain’t no receipts in MY Xmas (thank goodness)…
My girls want to see the Golden Compass, and I’m DYING to see the new Cage flick. I have the original on DVD and, yes, it requires a LOT of willing suspension of disbelief, but it’s capital-letter FUN and I’m hoping the sequel will be, too.
Just finished Dr Who. it was good, even damn good, but i felt the character development was a bit rushed and there were one or two flaws in the way things were carried out which i thought could have been done better.
Still, it feels pretty nice to get to see an anticipated tv program before the Americans for once. We’re still awaiting series one of the Phil shivers show over here
Oh, I forgot to say. It was written by Russell T Davis and it shows. I admire him as a producer and he certainly has breathed life into Dr Who which before his involvement was just about dead, but he really can’t write for toffee.
