Lost in a good book
May 1, 2008 by Organic Mama
Yesterday when the bus pulled up at the mouth of our driveway and deposited my two offspring (silly term: they more got pushed out than sprang off, so maybe they should be called pushedouts), my youngest daughter absently disembarked, barely noticing her surroundings.
As she walked, she was entirely, completely, utterly immersed in her book and managed to look up only long enough to not trip over the metal threshold of the sliding doors as she entered the kitchen. I kissed both daughters hello, hugged them until they squealed and directed them with a pointed finger to go hang up their jackets and backpacks. The phone rang at that point and I got caught up in a conversation with my sister so I didn’t notice that my youngest had disappeared.

Ten minutes later I went looking for Monkeyface and found her, jacket still on, STILL wearing her ridiculously heavy backpack, leaning against the wall, lost in her literary world.

I was that girl as a child. I love that she can immerse herself so deeply, though I would imagine it’s annoying if there are chores to be done!
“Just one more chapter, please….”
Snob, we’re kindred spirits (although I think I already knew that), because I was that child too, which is why I HAD to record this for posterity.
She comes by it honestly: when I was in camp at 12, I walked everywhere WHILE I was reading my fantasy series of choice. What did you read like this??
And yes, I had to chase her out of her book to get her to start working on her list of to dos!
Print this and put a copy in her baby book…
There’s nothing like being transported by a good book. And I’ve never found it as easy to do as when I was a kid.
So tell us what is this wonderful book???
Lanie;
Monkeyface was reading one of the Redwall series, by Brian Jacques. BUT it coud easily have been one of the Tamora Pierce books she’s been eating with both hands lately….
