Tonight – after sundown – is the first day in the Jewish New Year – Happy 5770!
What we try to do each year in these Days of AWE is to use the spirit of the holiday – renwal, growth and personal evolution - to inspire our thinking. Between now and next Sunday night (Yom Kippur), [...]

Seventeen years ago, Bob and I went out for Chinese food, came back to my parents’ house, watched the closing ceremonies of the summer olympics, and made out on the couch.
That was it. We were together.
It’s been a helluva ride.
In our time together, not necessarily in order or comprehensive, we got married in front of [...]

After a long drive from Ottawa yesterday, we’re home. Seeing the kids was incredible and I’m happy to report that despite the constantly psychotic sunny/rainy/windy/cloudy weather extravaganza they are also experiencing 9 hours away, they have been having a great summer. And, they’ve grown in the three weeks it had been since they’d stood next [...]

Shem is at peace.
Last night when my husband came home from work earlier than he was supposed to, Shem gathered strength and managed, despite being incapable of walking, to get off his pillows and out of his crate to greet him. Bob gathered Shem onto his lap and then sat stroking him for about [...]
Ten Things Tuesday: life with dogs

This post is a reprint from the early days of my blog, just after now 2 1/2 year-old Sephira came into our lives. With the filter of the almost pathos I have been writing through, I’ve been locked in the sad and melancholy. I’d like to remember this, the joy of my dogs, our [...]
It is what it is: taking it a day at a time

Shem’s been living the high life: he gets to be hand fed raw liver and ground buffalo, he gets to drink out of the toilet, he gets to hang out under Boo’s desk and sleep on the floor of the bathroom. He wandered outside in the shade this morning, and then soaked up some sun [...]

“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.” — Anonymous
Shem is in renal failure. And we’re not entirely certain why.
He [...]
Ten Things Tuesday: Dealing with Difficult People
Posted in Family Dynamics, Friends, Messages from the Universe, My life, Parenting, Ten things Tuesday on June 23, 2009 | 1 Comment »
I recently spent some time with someone I love very much and with whom I have common ground of a shared history, shared love for a variety of things, but also, a tendency to butt heads.
This post is about what I learned from the situation.
1. I can be an 8 year old, with all of [...]
Illusions of safety and security

You don’t have to be one of those people who have CNN on all the time to be aware of last Monday’s tragic crash of an Air France jet en route to Paris from Rio. As high-profile disaster stories go this one has been subject to the same media indulgences of photos and stories of [...]

Yesterday morning at 6:53, the kids walked to the mouth of the driveway to wait for the bus. So much is blooming, they like to walk, weighted down with stupid heavy backpacks, down the front steps. When I popped my head out of the slider to bid them a good day, they told me to [...]
About ME
In no particular order, I am a mother of a teen and pre-teen, a READER, a teacher, a wife, a lover of photography, an organic gardener, a chocoholic, a dog owner and lover, a twin, a Canadian/American dual citizen, an Anglophile and a lover of puns and wordy cleverness. I love to cook with organic ingredients and am forever substituting maple syrup for sugar in all my recipes. I love absurdity in its myriad forms and strive to raise awareness of the world's omnipresent absurdity in my teaching, in my mothering and in my friending. Welcome.-
